I am currently TDY in the United States and went down to get a roll and tea
at the self serve breakfast room of the hotel this morning. I went down
without shoes and was informed by the young lady doing the re-stocking that
I had to have shoes on while picking up the rolls and tea "for health
reasons." That struck me as odd and upon returning to my room, I started
doing some research. I came across a very interesting treatise regarding
barefooters and non-barefooters. If you replace barefooter with
breastfeeder, I think you will find some surprising similarities with the
arguments we in the lactation support field use. The most interesting quote
however was from a Michigan Supreme court ruling that, according to section
2.5 of the article, said:

"The man who goes either by himself or with his family to a public place
must expect to meet and mingle with all classes of people. He cannot ask, to
suit his caprice or prejudice or social views, that this or that man shall
be excluded because he does not wish to associate with them. He may draw his
social line as closely as he chooses at his home, or in other private
places, but he cannot in a public place carry the privacy of his home with
him, or ask that people not as good or great as he is shall step aside when
he appears."

This seems to me to apply directly to the need to cover up and try not to
offend others while feeding a baby. By the way, the duty of "not offending
others" should apply uniformly whether feeding by breast or bottle. If you
are interested in the rest of the article, you can find it at:
