Not much to add regarding screening, etc., for this strange looking milk,
but I can tell you about a case I saw recently. I received a call from a
mother whose 100% breastfed baby was (I think I recall) 3 to 4 weeks old.
She is a Spanish speaker and she told me she had "black milk". Not being
sure what exactly she meant, I asked her to come in. When she did it was 24
hours later and, as requested, she brought the baby hungry. We expressed a
little milk, and it looked fine to me. The mother said, yes, it had changed
back to its "real" color. The baby was thriving, gaining, no signs of any
distress; mother was not taking any medicine besides her prenatal vitamins,
so we did a diet recall. TO make a long story short - we came to the
conclusion that it must have been the oregano in the "menudo" (a tomato and
tripe stew, heavily spiced). She makes the menudo herself and the whole
family loves it because of her particular blend of spices. IT was the first
time she had eaten it since the birth of the baby. To my knowledge the
"black" never reappeared or she didn't call me the next time.
