As a non RN, private practice LC and LLLL I am confused and sad. I am
due to recertify in 2007 and my liability insurance expires in January
so my decision making time frame is very short. I have no idea what I
will do. I just spoke with a crying mother experiencing a breast
infection, a husband out of town on business for the past two weeks, a
baptism on Sunday and returning to work for the first time on Monday.
It's my day off but I helped her. She called at 7:30 am but I helped
her. This is what I do. And I suppose in many cases I could continue
to do most of the work I do now as an LLLL.

However, my own personal ethics will not allow me to take money from
clients if I cannot assist them as I currently do. My own personal
ethics will not allow me to not share every bit of information possible
to help a mother that needs me. My own personal ethics will also not
allow me to put my family in the position of being sued and I wonder
what kind of liability insurance will be available to me if I choose to
drop my IBCLC status and work with some other name.

So I am confused and sad. I'm not perfect. I have moms that I have not
been able to help as I wished. I have moms that need more than I can
give them and I refer them to others that can give them additional
help. I learn from this list every day. I learn from mothers every
day. I barely make any money on my LC practice. After I've paid for
gas and supplies and CERPS and insurance and books and everything else
- there isn't much profit. I guess I can increase my CERP expenses by
20% if I do recertifiy . . . another expense to eat at any money I might
make to compensate me for my time, energy and expertise.

I do not understand how it is ok to simply post this new SOP and the
information about CERPs on a website. What if I was an LC that didn't
belong to this list or didn't visit the IBLCE site occasionally? This
entire thing has been handled poorly from the beginning. Whatever
happened to an organization being responsible enough to notify people
about a change such as this - a huge change with major consequences and
impact on the people the organization certifies? When did it become ok
to allow this to filter to people? If there is a plan to provide this
via mail when is that going to happen? Already the CERP calculation has
been changed for a month and I found out yesterday. As upset as I am
about this whole issue, I am also shocked at the lack of professionalism
of the IBLCE to share and disseminate information in a professional
manner.

There is so much here that upsets me that I cannot even put it into
words. I am grateful for all of you that can. I write because there
are many of us who read but don't post who are feeling the same things
you are. I will do what I can live with in the end. At this point it
looks like that may be closing up shop and moving on in my life. And
that's a shame because I live in a large metropolitan area (Milwaukee)
with very few private practice LCs. I have no idea how others here will
deal with this issue but I know that for me, it's an issue that must be
dealt with almost right away. There may not be time for me to see how
this plays out. And that makes me confused and sad.

Mary Romskog IBCLC, RLC
