There was a news story last week that caught my eye. A suburban couple with
a totdler who has brain damage due to high levels of lead are being
interviewed. They state " they had a beautiful baby girl and offer the best
and now have a damaged child. " The report goes on to say this couple fed
their baby formula mixed with their tap water. They have now found that the
pipe leading to the house was old and corrosive leaking lead into their water
supply.
I feel very bad for this couple but I think a major point is missed - if this
mom had breast fed this baby would have had less exposure. Also this puts a
new light on the comments " formula feeding is relatively safe in this
country ( USA ) because we have safe water supplies." I can't stand when
hear this. Maybe more health care providers should know these stories before
they feel so comfortable recommending formula.
