I'm not a fan of complicated rules for introducing solids either, but as far as putting the
"widow of opportunity" "theory" on equal footing with solids displacing breastmilk
"Theory" it can't be done...

One is an unproven extrapolation from a small sample size of very unusual babies...
And the other is the number one cause of infant malnutrition world wide...

People concerned about the over-feeding of solids are not extremists.

The "Nurse First for the First Year" isn't so much a rule as teaching aid that helps mothers
with young babies realize that breastmilk ought to not be displaced from the infants diet
but solids should be a "complement" to the milk they are already getting.

If this weren't a real problem in the real world, that is if all mothers handled the
introduction of solids they way the way the mothers in the study Susan cited did, the
"Nurse First for the First Year" message would never have been invented...

I think once mothers understand that breastfeeding is not supposed to diminish during the
first year they can relax the "rule" about "Nursing First for the First Year" and still
manage breastfeeding and solids in such a way that breastfeeding is not diminished.

If anyone can think of a better, more easily remembered teaching tool than "Nurse First
for the First Year", I'm open to it...anything that more accurately yet still concisely
conveys the message would be great...I'm all for tweaking for greater precision...
