Hi Cindi,
One thing you can do is give the clients an insurance form to file. I
do get some back from insurance companies asking for more information,
but I've learned very quickly what works and what doesn't and get fewer
back all the time. For some reason, many companies will pay for 779.3
(feeding difficulty, newborn or infant) but not for mother related
diagnoses. So, if mom has mastitis, but baby has a crappy latch or
whatever, it's the baby's problem for billing purposes. Many insurance
companies don't know what to do with the lactation superbill , I've been
using the generic insurance forms that one can buy from staples on the
advice of Diane Wiessinger, and they do work so much better. (The
superbill is great, it just needs to be redesigned so it is in the
format insurance companies need it to be in). A referral from the
pediatrician is a big help too, it can be as simple as the words
"Lactation Consultant" written on a piece of prescription paper and
signed by the doctor.

I am noticing that parents are less willing to pay for consults all of a
sudden, I suspect it's because the economy is so bad. For a few years I
was spoiled, people were calling expecting to pay my fee. I am
disappointed that things have slid backwards. Fortunately, I have a lot
of conference engagements to take up some of the slack.

And I do agree with you that there are just not enough hours in the day
to do everything. Sigh,
