I know that this is an older post, but I have been away from my computer
for a while. My immediate thought was *Gentian Violet*, since the color
was "bright" and her infection was recent. What was mom treating herself
with?

I have had a mother tell me that even though she was exceedingly careful
with the Gentian Violet and *thought* it went nowhere but her baby's
bottom, she found mysterious bright purple spots in her house for weeks
later. It was our joke that Gentian Violet has a life of its own.
