Why do you weigh new babies every day in the US? And how long do the daily
weighings continue?

I'm curious!

Here babies are weighed at birth and then randomly - maybe at a week, or 14
days, or even later, and thereafter opportunistically. When mothers are
being cared for by people who know about bf and they've had a chance to
learn how to reassure themselves that bf is going well, this lack of
weighing is *not* an issue. It *can* be a problem, though, in my
experience, when bf is *not* going well and no one recognises it.....they
think all is okay, and then the baby is weighed after some time and found
to have lost weight or not gained at all...and then it's panic stations.

Ignorance about bf plus no weighing equals bad news. Good info plus
support, and just occasional weighing is fine - and to me, it seems
weighing every day means you tend to uncover 'problems' which just aren't
there....just like testing all new babies for blood sugar, which all the
*decent* research shows is not only unnecessary but is actively harmful to
bf.

What do you think?
