Kerry,
There are no legal ramifications in recommending an OTC. It is NOT prescribing! As with anything, we ought to do it being exactly clear about what our knowledge is and where we are getting our info. You give no details about her allergy, but I am assuming environmental allergies? Several options (I know nothing about medications): She can drink nettles tea, eat raw local honey, use homeopathy (need more info), take quercitin and take Emergen-C, avoid mucous-forming foods and above all NOT eating foods that she is allergic to and cause inflammation in her body.

Subject: Safe OTC allergy med?

Hi,
I am relatively new to this group, and I did first check the archives, but the
only relevant posts I found were from the 1990's. I am talking to a mom who has
no health insurance, has an 8 month old nursling, and wants to know if there is
a safe OTC allergy medication she can take. I am trying to check my Hale book,
but thought I would ask if anyone here could offer any up to date info/advice?
(by the way, I am aware of the potential legal ramifications of giving a mom med
advice, but as this mom is also a friend, and I will be making clear to her my
lack of medical knowledge/prescribing privileges, etc).
Many thanks in advance for any help,
Kerry
