Should a 35 week premmie, born a week ago at 5.5 lbs,
off bili lights after 3 days and latching only with a
nipple shield be getting mom's fresh milk or the
frozen-in-order-it-was-obtained?

Nurses state that the baby gets more colostrum that
way, Ruth Lawrence states that a LBW premmie should
get fresh "when it is available". Mom wants to feed
the fresh milk. They are having her freeze all milk
she pumps. What is the storage time for refrigerated
milk for a premmie? He was 5,5 lbs at birth. He is
healthy now, but for the lack of effective latch. He
is being gavage fed and they are limiting "attempts"
at breastfeeds to 3/day so he "doesn't get tired". I
encouraged skin to skin with an explanation of
physiological reactions to the norm of being held vs
the stress of being alone.

kate
who is very tired from a day at CSI (formerly HRE)
sessions- those are exhausting! who knew?!
