I'm not sure if anyone has posted this, but I just stumbled upon a great
little commentary article in this week's Business Week (Aug 6, 2001)
entitled "Give nursing moms a break at the office" by Diane Brady. It is on
p 70 and is probably also on their website. The article provides
suggestions such as providing lactation rooms, hand out subsidized pumps,
train managers abou the issue and offer facilities to store milk and points
out several benefits: healthier employees and children, fewer sick days,
increased satisfaction, shorter materninty leaves (boo, hiss in my opinion),
lower hc costs, and reduced turnover. Brady cites CIGNA corp's 4 yr old
program which has had 500 participants a year and is now saving the company
$300,000 each year. She points out that even Nestle, USA has a lactation
program (news to me) for their workers.
