Hi Shirley--
How nice to see you on Lactnet (I met you several years ago at the U of A
Hospital's breastfeeding seminar that Jack Newman, among others, spoke at).

Thank you for your post regarding vasospasm. I plan to share this
information with a doctor I confer with because she would be open to trying
a new treatment. It will be great having another option to consider these
mothers.

I, too, have found it's not all that uncommon, and that it's in conjunction
with very sore nipples. Several of these mothers continued to have blanching
even after pumping, so it's not just a latch problem, although the sore
nipples indicate problems.

One of these mothers I remember particularly well because we worked so hard
on this--she was a dietician and highly motivated to breastfeed. She just
could not stand the pain between feedings, however, and found that once she
fed only every other feeding she could stand it (otherwise the pain was only
starting to subside and then it was time for another feeding). This was such
a heartbreaker for her (and me). Glad others are working on the problem.
Maybe one of your staff could put the article together for you--it would be
great having something published on this topic.
