I'd talked to a mom by phone, helping her reposition her baby, who hadn't
been gaining despite "constant" breastfeeding. She was pleased to hear more
swallowing, and she went on to see a LLL Leader who reinforced the improved
position.

A month or so later she called, saying she was still using a lot of formula
despite help from numerous people. She was pumping as directed, nursing,
taking fenugreek, and slowly going nuts with the hard work of it all.

We had a second conversation, and nothing that I heard seemed to make sense
- she was able to pump 3 or more ounces at a crack, yet the baby, now 4
months old, took 30 oz of formula a day - so she came over.

It turned out she hadn't been given such bad advice: "Nurse, and pump 6
times a day."

But what she *heard* was "Nurse and pump, 6 times a day."

She was nursing, and following the nursing up with a pumping, 6 times each
day. No wonder she wasn't getting anywhere! And the huge amount of formula
included copious vomiting that followed feeds of up to 9 oz. Mom wore pads
to control leaking, sprayed milk, and baby glugged 3 1/2 oz at breast while
they were here. Those breasts really wanted to give milk, given half a
chance (or rather, given twice as many chances).

We changed the plan to no pumping (except once during her half-day work
day), and nurse nurse nurse.

It's been a week. The baby is already down to 4-8 oz of formula a day, has
nearly stopped spitting up, enjoys nursing (he'd been starting to strike),
and mom is delighted.

Ah, they should all be so easy! But I'm going to be very careful to make
sure mom understands where the comma goes, the next time I give directions!
