Vicky,

A Manhattan ENT who clips both lingual and labial frenulums explained that
she clips a labial frenulum if the upper lip cannot be folded up to the
nose (hope one can visualize this). Pictures on Larry Kotlow's website show
effects of tight labial frenulum; kiddsteeth.com, click on articles and it's
the first one listed. The little blister on the mid upper lip is also an
indication of tight upper frenulum. It would seem that as baby gapes for
latch the upper lip is pulled in and that tension makes baby feel it and
respond by sucking upper lip; sounds tight to me.

Has anyone associated a tight upper labial frenulum with strong tendency
to suck the upper lip during attempts at latching? The baby I have in mind
also doesn't flange his upper lip outwardly with the bottle or breast. Yet
the ped said "no tongue tie or tight labial frenulum evident". I see his
labial frenulum but not really sure how tight is tight, and the symptoms give
me reason to wonder.
