One of my frustrations working with women as of late is the seemingly
overuse of products such as the mylicon drops. Many women seem to think
their babies are just colicky and fussy. It appears that the babies are not
burping adequately - many books state that breastfed babies may not need to
burp as often so I think they are not really concerned. These babies are
fussy, pass gas from their bottom which by the way we always called
"shooting ducks" - "shooting bears" was the term for a bm. These babies
also have hiccups quite a bit. The mothers are sometimes waiting to long to
burp and the air is to far down and hard to get up - they are not applying
adequate pressure to their stomach or if the baby becomes fussy while trying
to burp them they put them immediately back on the breast thinking the baby
is hungry.

I have discovered that not only does this principle hold true for babies but
have confirmed it recently through my little experience. We rescued a small
kitten probably only 4 weeks old from a sewer drain pipe. It was too small
to drink from a bowl so I have been using a syringe with some small pump
tubing on the end to feed it - it drinks a little too fast sometimes (like
an overactive let down) and gulps more air - (like a baby with a poor seal
or one who breaks suction) It needs to burp!! It will meow and cry (hurt
meow) until it is adequately burped. After one or two you may think that is
all but it can still be fussy until it is fully relieved off all the air. I
have found this so interesting in relation to the whole burping issue.
