Yes, a newborn and a 8 to 9 month old--older baby is adopted, and the
mother found out that she was pregnant right before the adoption took
place! She did not induce lactation for the adoptee, but now is looking
forward to breastfeeding two babies. However, she would like to know what
other people might have found best in similar situations:
1) Should she wait to put the older baby on until the milk "comes in" so
the newborn gets most of the colostrum?
2) Can she treat these two babies as if they were twins and just go
merrily on her way breastfeeding both ad lib?
3) Should she express milk for the older baby and either cup or bottle
feed a few times a day as opposed to unlimited access to the breast?

The baby hasn't been born yet but is due very soon. So the mom is open to
any and all scenarios, suggestions, advice and encouragement!

We would appreciate hearing from the collective wisdom of lactnetters.
Thanks

Pearl Shifer, IBCLC
