Karen, I have been working with a mom and babe who are almost identical
to what you describe here. Mom was sooo sad that breastfeeding was very
difficult after she went through all the effort of birthing naturally so
that there would be no drug interference. Dad is an epidemiologist who
was soooo upset at baby's chances of more ear infections etc. if they
switched to formula.

I would say that, had this baby's palate been one fraction of a cm.
higher it would have been a soft cleft..... all the signs of Pierre
Robin sequence were there but the cleft. Yes... this baby has some
respiratory difficulties and they are related to his high palate and,
therefore, narrow nasal airway. He really cannot sleep well lying on his
back because he gets so "snorty" in that position. He sleeps side-lying
and swaddled, in a side car crib next to mom.

I give this mom (and you) tremendous credit for providing as much breast
milk as possible for as long as possible... in the face of great
adversity. And, these cases illustrate, beautifully I believe, why one
size cannot fit all when it comes to breastfeeding, or co-sleeping, or
any aspect of parenting.

I am wondering... did you find your son to be a "high need" baby? This
little guy definitely fits that description, and I wonder how much of it
is related to his unique problems.

Susan
