I need some collective wisdom on this matter regarding one of my
acquaintances.  She is pregnant, and just got released from the hospital.
Her hemoglobin at discharge was 6.  She wants to breastfeed, but the docs
are discouraging it, because it would allegedly be too draining on her.
She'll get a transfusion after baby arrives, and it taking 2 iron
supplements a day for the duration of the pregnancy.  She's also been told
she should not have any further children because it is too dangerous for
her.  I would've thought that not having periods during the breastfeeding
time would be helpful to a woman in this situation.  Is this another
example of breastfeeding being "sacrificed on the altar of ignorance"?  (I
just love that phrase, Jack!)  I told her she should ask for copies of
evidence-based research articles from peer-reviewed journals that support
their claim that breastfeeding would lower a mom's hemoglobin.  Any
thoughts?
