There is currently an internatl WHO co-ordinated study on this. The Aussie
group is reporting that 9mo was typical for their bunch of predominantly
breastfeeding (mostly NMAA members). The mothers with earlier return of
menses were weaning (as were the later mothers). Comparisons with the
other participating groups (Sweden, India, China, N ? in Africa - the mental
block strikes again - Ah Nigeria) showed that the Chinese group was the
only other group with "late" return. From memory. I shall try to post
at least one of the researchers names (now she wanted to sub to Lactnet!)
The common trait between the Chinese and the Aussies was total time
at breast over the day (both comparatively larger). The Chinese were
doing it for shorter intervals, more often and more at night, but overall
the babies were getting similar total durations. From memory...
