Dear Phyllis,
I was out of town the first four days last week, and it has taken me
this long to get caught up! You asked, "Could allergies also manifest by
angry, stiff bodied screaming?" Absolutely, yes. My first child was miserably
affected by dairy allergies. This was 23 years ago, and the first information
that babies could be affected by what their mothers ate was just becoming
available. Dan was 6 weeks old before I learned anything about food allergies. He
spent most of those first 6 weeks nursing, screaming, throwing up, nursing,
screaming, throwing up, over and over, until he would get exhausted and sleep
for a few hours. On a number of occasions, he would just scream and scream and
not want to nurse. The screaming lasted 20 to 60 minutes. (Sometimes I would
cry along with him.) There was nothing I could do but hold him, and then as
the minutes passed and he began to lower his decibel level a bit so that I
thought he might be able to hear me, I would begin to sing very softly in his ear
as I held him on my shoulder. The screaming would continue, though at less
and less volume, until he would finally fall asleep. Once I learned about
possible food allergies and eliminated dairy from my diet, his screaming sessions
stopped. He had other problems, so sometimes he would still throw up and/or
cry, but the really horrible screaming stopped when I got rid of dairy. The
Paragoric that his doctor prescribed really did not help him. He was so
sensitive that I had to avoid all sources of dairy.
Good luck to your family in helping your grandchild be more
comfortable.
