Hi
Have you thought of flower pressure to relieve the areola oedema? As to the method of expressing, I would use whatever worked and probably a mixture of hand expressing to get the flow going, then the pump till flow stops. Some other basic things I find for women with breast oedema - wearing a bra promotes lymphatic drainage.
As for the mother and baby:
What about the baby doing regular skin to skin contact? Often if you ask a neonatologist, they will support this even if it means the baby visits the mother. Then if the baby should happen to breastfeed.....

Perhaps the early use of a galactogogue may help.

Gwen
