Although we all believe in the "milk" of human kindness and "breast is
best" we have to remember that we do live in a world (and country-US) that
is very bound by rules, laws and litigation. One of the reasons, in spite
of the decline in breastfeeding, that we live longer are the public health
rules that most follow.

There are avenues to getting breast milk. They are stringent enough to
make the supply safe and costly enough to make the reasons for using
banked milk un frivolous. I sort of shudder to think of the self-centered
person who would use banked milk, rather than making her own :-( All
through history there have been this sort of mother and we don't want to
make it easy for her. It's not the milk that is all important, it is the
mother/baby relationship. Also I just read Deanne's message about a baby
getting breast milk from a bank. This is exactly the sort of situation
that is legitimate/vital/necessary.

OTOH, I do see a parallel between "milk banking" and "hospital birth".
What you do between you and your sister or friend is your business. We
don't have to organize it by setting up a site and brokering exchanges of
milk amongst strangers. I'm not sure if I'm saying this right, I hope you
get what I mean. Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
