Dear Lactnet friends,

For many reasons I have decided to leave my hospital
LC position. I was offered and accepted a transfer to
the nursery. However, when I told my supervisor that I
would not hand out formula marketing bags she said
that I could not work there if I would not perform the
"required duties." She compared it to me "not liking
carrots so not handing out carrots." I did give her
copies of the International Code and the IBLCE Code of
Ethics. This supervisor has been terribly unsupportive
of breastfeeding and I am fed up. I thought that I
could still help breastfeeding families, which I love
to do, without some of the political hassles in the
nursery. However, I don't know if that is possible or
if I even want to fight this battle. If they do say I
can work in the nursery, minus the marketing bags, I
would also not want to use the formula tape measures,
crib cards, etc. Have any of you worked in a facility
where you used your own supply of such items? I have
worked at this hospital for 20 years and other
opportunities in the maternal-child area are very
limited here. (By the way, we had 2600+ deliveries
last year. We have a NICU and one LC FTE position. We
are expected to see all breastfeeding mothers, answer
phone calls and see outpatients. Just in case anyone
of you wants to apply for our opening!!!) Thanks in
advance for any advice/support!
