Oh, do tell the story, Maurenne! Now you've piqued our curiosity - and just

Call me a rabble-rouser but I just don't give the baby up to the nursery
nurse. I do the same admission assessment on the baby as they would do in
the nursery, just that I do it on mom's belly or at least as mom is
watching. Once the baby is assessed and has had at least one opportunity
to nurse, I wheel the baby to the nursery to get weighed and oh if looks
could talk... You would think they would be happy that I was helping make
their job easier! I do have permission from my supervisor to try this as
we are slowly transitioning (read: digging our collective heals in) to
mother baby nursing. After weighing, I pick up the baby's chart and take
it back with me to L & D. It would be an improvement if I didn't have to
walk 100 yards to get the baby weighed, but change takes time.

I don't know why but a lot of the separation issues that moms and babies
face in the hospital and in society today really bugs me. It's as if very
few people understand that this routine separation is not normal, whether
that be right after birth or at 6 weeks postpartum when moms go back to
work and her baby goes to child care.

Cathy, don't go no mail!
