Dear Laura,

Re: << ...6 1/2 month old baby is cutting his two lower teeth....yellow
stained>>

Gretchen's is probably correct. Early infection or fever can affect enamel
formation.

Assure the mother it is highly unlikely that they are "decayed". Only rarely
will a tooth be decayed before eruption.....and they have probably not been
in the mouth long enough (months) to be exposed to sugar and bacteria to
decay--at the age of 6 1/2.

Also, assure the mother that other baby teeth may be affected as an infant
fever can show up as a line in the later erupting baby teeth. Usually no
effects will be seen in the adult teeth from the same event, although they
can become affected from later life fevers as well as too much fluoride or
staining drugs like tetracycline.

Also, assure the mother when the child is about age 3 or 4, the discolored
teeth can usually rather easily be bonded to look better...until they fall
out around age 6 years. The pedodontist will confirm the above speculation.
Take Care!
