infection to show up first on the mom's nipples?<<
Absolutely. Had a case of this yesterday. Mom came in for latch-on help with
a 2 day old baby. I cringed when I saw her areola!!! Bright, bright pink, dry
cracked, complained of itching and burning the last 5 mo!!! And real pain
afer nursing. Her OB told her breast tenderness was normal when she first
complained at 20 weeks gestation (I don't think he looked). The history was
much the same as the case you report, nor other yeast sites, however the
*kicker* was she was a gestational diabetic. I explained that diabetics have
problems with yeast all the time. I also warned that it may take a while to
get it cleared up. Baby has no obvious signs except rubbing the tongue
against the palate (real difficult latch) plus macro glossia. When I
commented on the tongue grandma proudly announced *She had the same thing
when she (the mom) was born and I never could breastfeed.*
>>>Her OB told her pink color was just due to soreness and suggested not
using yeast treatment yet because if it was definitely yeast it will get
worse before it gets better.<< I decided to treat mom and not to treat the
baby just yet. Our peds get a little upset if we treat the really young ones.
But I think waiting until it gets worse is not the way to go with the mom.
