Hi, Laurie. I'm not sure that every parent would want to continue
breastfeeding. We recently had a baby whose bili was 28. It had no risk
factors such as blood type, bruising, etc. Weight gain was good. The baby
was put on formula for 48 hours--in addition to triple phototherapy
lights. In this situation, I don't know that I would want to encourage a
mom to keep breastfeeding through the treatment (maybe resuming about 24
hours would be ok). After seeing a video on kernicterus, I am very
frightened of any child getting it. Our neonatologist explained that they
don't really know which babies will develop it, but 28 is pretty high. I
think we have to look at it case by case. What are your thoughts?

Joyce, RN, IBCLC
