I just stumbled across an interesting website, purely by accident. It is by
Nestle and it seems the purpose is to inform us how supportive they are of
breastfeeding! They say this about their actions in third world countries.
Certainly, it is important that inappropriate use of infant formula does not
add to this problem, which is why in the developing world Nestlé does not
promote infant formula to mothers. The stories of Nestlé attempting to
convince mothers to stop breastfeeding are simply not true, as we have a
policy of prohibiting communication with mothers about infant formula..
They also make this claim,
A little-known fact is that Nestle is one of the largest private producers
of breastfeeding promotional material in the world. Nestlé is also the
largest private distributor of the WHO Code of Marketing of Breast Milk
Substitutes in the world, having distributed tens of thousand of copies to
educate both our staff and the health systems we deal with.
To read this site's info, one would think they were knights on white
chargers, galloping in to save the day for breastfeeding! Perhaps this has
already been discussed on Lactnet and if so, I apologize for bringing it up
again. However, I'd like to know, are their claims above true? The site
pretty well down-played formula's role in causing the health problems and
deaths that the WHO is trying to stop, but are they really as active in
breastfeeding promotion and support as this site would have you believe?
Somehow, I don't think so. What's the real story?
Here's the site: http://www.babymilk.nestle.com/
