I'm new to Lactnet but so far have found it fascinating. I'm a NICU nurse/LC
in Boston. A 40 hour position was recently created to serve primarily the
NICU(40 beds) and some of the other pediatric areas as the need arises. I job
share with a wonderful colleague. We're starting at square one, have yet to
even get an office!
We're very excited.
One of our first consults as LC's was a mom of 28 week trips. She wasn't
really planning on BF but we convinced her it would be the best for the
babies. She began pumping. When feeds initiated all received EBM exclusively
and all did well. About 2 weeks out mom developed a mastitis, milk was
cultured and grew out Group B strep. Since that time we have not been able to
give them milk. They have so far tolerated the formula. Mom has been treated
with Keflex, finished course, but milk is still positive. Currently on another
antibiotic(not sure what). Babies were cultured 2 were negative, 1 positive
but probably from a cellulitis. Mom is starting to get discouraged. Anybody
have any experience with this? No one here seems to have any ideas other than
not giving them milk. Pasturize it? So far have only seen references to this
with babies who have actually been put to breast. We would love to be able to
give them EBM as well as put them to breast. They are almost 33 weeks now and
have wonderful sucks! Thanks for your help.
