Hi Erika,
I had a case like this many years ago, I was not so experienced in
lactation consulting. The mother had a miserable baby and then
switched to soy, after trying many tactics in between, don't remember
it all, but she was really trying to bf. I never could understand it.
The only thing was this mother was what I would call an exercise
fanatic, and was quite thin. She was a sort of workaholic, type A
person, a nicu nurse and in grad school. I remember, too, she ate alot
of yogurt. I'm sure we eliminated that, but maybe not all traces of
milk or bovine???
By any chance, is your client very thin, or have any issues with
calorie intake or expenditure?
I know we've talked about this a little before: one school of thought
is mom's don't need to worry much about their diets, unless severely
malnourished; and another school of thought is that many mothers are
poorly nourished (not necessarily calorie deprived, but real
nutrition) and that this can indeed affect the baby. Does any of this
resonate with you?
