<<"Formula feeding is the longest lasting uncontrolled experiment

lacking informed consent in the history of medicine."

1997 - Frank Oski, MD, retired editor, Journal of Pediatrics>>

Thanks for posting that item on the dolphins, Sylvia. I live in Vancouver
BC Canada where we have the dubious distinction of having had several baby
belugas die in the first days/weeks post birth at the Vancouver Aquarium.
Sea mammals don't do well nourishing their babies in captivity. From the
look of this article, maybe vets are learning something about what might
work. The mistakes that were made here are

1. The Aquarium did a big publicity campaign and sold lots of tix to
"gawkers" to come and see a cute little baby whale.

2. Scientists were all over the place, measuring and interfering.

3. When they figured out that the colostrum was all-important, they beached
the mother in a holding pool and pumped her breasts with the most awful
looking whale breast pump (I kid you not, I have video of it from the
newscasts-note to self, must give that to Diane Wiesinger for her talks).
They, then, gavauge fed the baby who (hmmmmm) died soon after.

Hopefully the baby dolphin in this story is getting privacy and not being
used as an attraction.

I thought your signature quote (above) was interesting. I would beg to
differ with Frank Oski, MD---circumcision would better qualify with formula
feeding coming in second.
