From my experience, the mothers who I have suggested the use of Sudifed on a
short term basis, have not had a problem with their milk supply.
When a mother calls inquiring what she can take for cold symptoms my
recommendations are; treat the symptoms, avoid long acting meds and
combination meds, use nasal spray over oral meds when possible.  I then give
them a list of cold medications that are approved in breastfeeding.
When it comes to medications my standard statement is to use short acting
drugs and to take them after breastfeeding so that little on none is left in
the breast milk when the baby goes to nurse again.
I agree with Pat that some of the symptoms for a cold can be treated without
medications such as; rest, increase fluids, humidifiers and good cleaning of
hands and eating utensils.
