One other difference between "then" and "now" that hasn't been mentioned is the fact that we very rarely see babies go truly full term, at least at our hospital.  The majority of our babies are "near-term", many 35- 37 weekers out on the floor with their mothers.  My children who are ages 35 down to 29 were all over 40 weeks and probably benefited from that extra 6 to 10 days in utero.  Today, if a baby hasn't come naturally by 40 weeks, they're all induced immediately and very often, they're induced before 40 weeks just for the convenience of the mom and/or doctor.
