To Gail Macklin: I think what you are doing is just great. A local LC's
daughter "won the science fair" with breastfeeding as a topic. So, for all
of you out there wanting to get your sons and daughters a first prize, this
one is a winner. First they took cows milk, formula and breast milk, put
them into vials of white cider vinegar (a weaker acid than of the stomach
but safe cheap etc) and observed the reaction of how differently each looked
when digested. The cows milk has huge curds, formula broken curds with
breast milk smooth as silk. Then the discussion went to "why is breast milk
different" and the health benefits. Of course the kids will go home and ask
their moms etc. "did you breastfeed me?" and then "why didn't you
breastfeed me?"- You should address this in class- "what we know now, that
we didn't know then" (BFHI issues, positioning the baby). I also love the
intro to the subject using a home made cookie and a store bought, asking
kids which they would rather have. As my kids are 3rd and 4th grade, this
may seem a little babyish. Just think- in a few more years (like 3 or 4)
some of these kids will be conceiving and giving birth. Unfortunate but true.
