Hi Carol~
You didn't mention whether or not she had attempted nursing while
baby is in a sleepy state? This is typically the most successful time to
nurse a striking baby. It sounds like you have told this mom all the
right things to do. The only two things I would add is: Rather than not
forcing baby at breast, she should actually do all the skin to skin with
the mindset that she will not even attempt to nurse the baby. I say this
because I think it's very tempting while holding baby skin to skin to
give a little try, and for some babies, it's as if you've broken the
trust. So I would say lots of skin to skin (bath is perfect) with no
attempts. (My own baby eventually self attached with this approach.)
Second: If possible, I would eliminate all other artificial nipples
(incl. pacifiers) and give EBM in a cup only. Sounds like she may still
be doing a combination of bottle/ cup. Seven month olds still have pretty
high sucking needs and this baby will be more likely to meet that need at
the breast if it's not met somewhere else. Best of luck.
