Subject: Constipation in a four month old...
"baby who is excluisvley BF is experiencing problems with her babies
stools. Her daughter is now stooling
once a week, which is O.K. but when she stools it is quite hard, and causes
intense discomfort and bleeding to baby. I am positive the baby is not
being supplemented in any way. What could
cause this? Could something she is eating cause this?(her thoughts)
What would you recommend to this mom if she had phoned you?:

Hi, Jane,
I would ask if she is taking prenatal vitamins and/or extra iron tablets,
and perhaps to a one or two week trial of discontinuing them. (Be sure to
give her some ideas of iron-rich food sources). Although some of the
research is annecdotal, there is mention of maternal intake of iron
supplements causing stool changes in their infants. Riordan and Auerbach
mention it in their text (which I have just reread cover to cover for the
second time in a month in prep for The Exam this July...)
