Hi All,

Well, after reading that an IBCLC was exonerated after working with a
formula company.and the comments of others, it just really leads me back to
wondering how IBLCE is going to fix this by the time I am to re-sit the exam
(2010). What is the point? If the SoP was supposed to be specifically for
me (an IBCLC without another credential) and ties my hands so I cannot work
as an allied member of the healthcare team, then what am I to do? Why
bother spending money on a certification that allows me the honor of doing
nothing? I am a single parent working as a Private Practice LC who truly
doesn't have the money to be spending on CERPS - yet I do it because it is
good for me for my education and it is required so I can re-sit the exam.
I'd much rather save my money on the IBLCE exam and spend it on more
continuing education.makes more sense. I don't need the IBCLC certification
to do a good job and to know what I am doing.

If IBLCE is violating their own Code of Ethics then who are they to tell me
what I can and cannot do ethically? Who are they to tell me how I should
behave and how I should practice? I don't want to be an RN - I don't have
the time or money right now as a single parent working her butt off to feed
her kids to go get a BA, MA and PhD in anything, including Lactation - no
matter how badly I want it. And quite honestly, if I don't respect an
organizations ethics - why on earth would I want to be associated with it?
I am so anal-retentive about ethics, honesty and fair-play that I irritate
myself and get into internal arguments regularly making sure that I am
behaving and working in an ethical manner. If I know someone is not ethical
in their line of work I refuse to refer to them - I don't want my name
associated with people like that. That affects MY business - which affects
my ability to earn a living and take care of my family. If my own
certifying organization doesn't care enough about it's own internal ethics
and the ethics it directs us to have and does NOT discipline appropriately -
then why should I repsect them? Apparently I (and many others I am sure) am
behaving in a more ethical and professional manner than they are. Can you
tell I am really upset by this?

Royce stated that she wanted to have the IBCLC in order to give her clients
the best care possible - and I respect that - I think that is wonderful and
I wish I could still feel that way too - but I don't anymore. I too would
like to have the IBCLC title/certification so that my clients know I have
that education. But it goes back to the fact that as it stands at this
moment, that title of IBCLC means NOTHING (for people like me without
another credential like RN or MD). If we follow the SoP they put out to the
letter we will not be able to help mothers appropriately. We will be
looking over our shoulders wondering if we accidentally contradicted someone
and the other members of the health care team will not take us seriously.

That certainly doesn't help ANY IBCLC out at all - regardless of whether or
not they have another credential. In fact it hurts the field as a whole to
segregate IBCLC's into those who can (who are RN, or MD, etc and can fall
back on their other credential) and those who can't (direct entry like me
with no other credential to fall back on). IBCLC's should ALL be EQUAL in
what they can and cannot do. Those guidelines should make sense for all.
IBLCE is an international certification - therefore the guidelines should
make sense for the international community - not just the sue happy
countries.yeah, like the USA. We are supposed to be a stand-alone
profession that works hand in hand with the health care team. The way it is
going - that will cease to be the case.

IBLCE should (imp) be more concerned about putting out an SoP that makes
sense, is fair, and gives us clear, workable guidelines that allow us to
provide the best of are to all rather than if someone out in la-la sue-happy
land is going to have a hissy fit because they don't think we should have
the clout that we should have.

Frustrated with all of this.it just doesn't feel right and it sure doesn't
make sense. I might as well call myself a Professional Lactation Consultant
and be done with it. I am a professional - I am a consultant - I consult on
Lactation.

Jaye
