The AAP recommends follow-up within 48-72 hours of discharge for a
breastfeeding baby. That is the "community" standard. If a ped tells a mom
2 weeks for first check up and baby gets into trouble because of not being
seen in 48-72 hours I would think there is some liability involved.

I don't think we can realistically expect new parents to look at a new baby
in the same way that a health professional would. They don't
know/understand the red flags the way a HCP would. They are preoccupied
with "being a new parent" and the physical aspects of postpartum life.

Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit used to use a 24 hour discharge program with
follow-up in the home within the next 24 hours with a visiting nurse.
Program seemed to work well. I'm not sure if they still do it or not.
Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
