In looking again at the CDC recommendation --and another LC tells me that this is a very recent revision -- it does specify "newborns" and "in a healthcare setting," which is not the same as prohibiting direct breastfeeding to nursing mothers in their own homes.   If it is indeed a change, the CDC deserves credit for rethinking the issue -- balancing over-arching recommendations concerning health with the practical realities of people's lives is difficult work.
