I note that the statistics refer to breast cancer DEATHS, not just new
cases. In that case, one big factor is probably increased awareness and
early detection. Early detection and treatment is the biggest factor in
reducing the death statistics. That isn't to detract from the effects
of environmental pollutants and not breastfeeding, however. The biggest
obstacle to early detection is attitude. I heard of one program where
hairdressers were being recuruited and trained to bring up the subject
in the course of chatting with their clients. I feel that we, too have
a role in this. While we do discuss the fact that not breastfeeding
swings the odds toward increased risk, we also need to encourage women
not to become complacent and to keep up with their own breast awareness,
mammograms etc.
Winnie, who found out the hard way.
