Introducing the Comfort Proteins in Nestle Carnation Good Start; Only Good
Start Infant Formula is Designed to Provide Babies With an Extra Measure of
Comfort

     GLENDALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 18, 1999--Today, Nestle(R)
introduces Comfort Proteins(TM) to moms and babies throughout the United
States, emphasizing the benefits of Good Start(R) infant formula's 100
percent whey protein, specially processed to be gentle on a baby's delicate
digestive system.

For more than a decade, moms and babies have enjoyed the special care
that Nestle takes in its manufacturing of Good Start. Now, with the Comfort
Proteins called out on a newly designed packaging, moms can easily identify
the complete nutrition with an extra measure of comfort that only Carnation
Good Start provides.

The Comfort Proteins in Good Start are 100 percent whey protein, the
primary type of protein in breastmilk. Most milk-based formulas also contain
casein proteins that can form hard curds in a baby's stomach, which may be
difficult for some babies to digest.

The protein in Good Start is then broken down into smaller pieces by a
special hydrolyzing process to be gentle on a baby's developing digestive
system. Good Start is the only routine formula with this extra gentle step in
its processing. The proteins in other routine milk-based formulas are large
and intact, which can also be hard on a baby's still-maturing digestive
system.

Nestle Carnation Good Start is the only infant formula with Comfort
Proteins -- broken-down whey proteins that are easy to digest in baby's tummy.

In addition, as with all Nestle(R) Carnation(R) baby formulas, Good
Start(R) is iron fortified to ensure baby's healthy growth and development.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recently reaffirmed its recommendation
that only iron-fortified formulas are a reasonable alternative to breastmilk.
Nestle supports the American Academy of Pediatrics' recommendation that
breastmilk is the best source of nutrition for babies throughout the first
year of life.

     About Nestle

Meeting the nutritional needs of America's infants, the Nestle USA
Nutrition Division is responsible for the manufacture and marketing of such
well-known baby formula brands as Nestle(R) Carnation(R) Good Start(R),
Alsoy(R), Follow-Up(TM), and Follow-Up Soy(TM).

In addition, the Nutrition Division is responsible for The Very Best
Baby Resource. This initiative supports expecting and new parents with expert
advice on infant feeding including breastfeeding, baby's development and
mother's nutrition and fitness.

Nestle has a strong history of bringing out the very best in babies. It
all started in 1867, when a young pharmacist named Henri Nestle was asked to
look in on a neighbor's child who could not breastfeed. Henri saved the
baby's life by creating a special mixture of what would later be recognized
as the world's first infant food. Nestle has been in the business of caring
for babies ever since.

Headquartered in Glendale, Nestle USA has 19,500 employees, $8 billion
in sales and is part of the Swiss-based Nestle S.A., the world's largest
food company.
