I have some new clients who had a hospital birth, the first L and D nurse
that came in reeked of cigarettes, she was in her scrubs and was trying to
help with breathing etc.  The family rightfully asked for a new nurse and
were chastised.  The charge nurse, whom they had requested a new nurse told
them, "so and so has been in L and D for 23 years, she is very good at what
she does, it is wrong of you to ask for a new nurse"  to which they replied,
"But she just went and smoked a cigarette and then came into our room, she
stinks and has a terrible cough."  So, they got a new nurse but the charge
nurse was awful to them for the rest of her shift!!  Isn't that awful?  When
we know how dangerous second hand smoke, even on clothes can be?  Imagine
those poor babies who get a big whiff and a rub down by her at birth.  Talk
about early exposure.
