Hello, Barb.
I have often gotten calls from moms describing similar symptoms, and
quite often it turns out to be a virus of some sort! Moms will be complaining
about how much their baby is suddenly nursing. But when I ask more questions,
it turns out big brother came home sick from preschool three days ago, or dad
has a cold, or mom has had "indigestion" for a couple of days. Because baby
is "only" fussy, and not feverish or throwing up or suffering from diarrhea or
terribly congested, mom doesn't realize that baby is really suffering from
the same "bug" that the other members of the family have. It's just that the
breastmilk keeps the baby's symptoms from being as severe (and recognizable!) as
the rest of the family. And once mom realizes that baby is probably sick, it
suddenly becomes much easier for her to accept baby's behavior and deal with
it appropriately, rather than getting frustrated with this baby who is wanting
to nurse all the time and just won't settle. Has your daughter already
gotten to the in-laws' home? Has that grandma or grandpa been ill, that baby may
have picked up germs in that home? Have either mom or dad been feeling "off"
lately?
