In our unit the nurses are suppose to take care of 3-4 mother/baby couplets.
A total of 6-8 patients. (antepartum patients are 4-1, NICU is 3 or 4 to 1,
labor is 2-1, AWHONN standards) That is our policy. BUT......many times I
have seen them needing to take 10 total patients. on the mother/baby post partum
units. I have heard nurses state at other hospitals they took care of 10-12
patients. When that happens it is so much easier to miss things and they have
no time to help with nursing. It gets totally overlooked. As we all know
helping a Mom nurse who is having problems and or she is very "needy" can take a
lot of time. The nurses do not always have the luxury of time. Even though
our motto is "we have the time, what can I do for you".
