How frustrating and you are right on target when you say the labor and
birthing practices are probably having a huge impact on these lab values.
Our policy at our small hosp in south Louisiana, unfortunately is to check
all babies shortly after birth w/ a chemstrip. LGA, SGA, IDM babies are
checked more often. If betw 30 - 40 but asymptomatic of hypoglycemia, babies
are not supplemented. This is in our policy, but most docs and nurses supp.
if below 40 anyway. If over 40, they are not supp'ed. If under 40 and
symptomatic, they are supp'd.  Yes, we have a committee tryng to change
this.
