Yvonne,
I have come across a case like this - the baby was a boy, and breastfeeding
wasn't going well at all. If my memory serves me correctly, baby was
getting quite a lot of formula already. I was called by the mum, as an LC,
to help with the breastfeeding before the mastitis problem flaired (which
it did very suddenly). Baby was quickly hospitalised and breastfeeding was
totally abandoned in the panic. So I suspect, as Pat Young mentioned, that
the hormones responsible were more likely from the pregnancy than from
breastfeeding.

One thing that I remember was that when the mum and baby presented at the
hospital she had trouble getting staff to understand that she was there
because her *baby* had mastitis. They kept thinking it must have been
*her*! So it must be quite unusual.
