Hi, All: The thread on delivery methods, incontinence, and breatfeeding is
very interesting. While reading the various posts, the question came to
mind: How many HCPs have actually either personally experienced an
unmedicated home or homelike birth or been involved in one? I suspect very
few - we wouldn't have the "routine standard" practices we have, especially
here in the West. 2 of my 3 births were in the hospital, but unmedicated
and very "homelike". I didn't have people in my face counting and yelling
PUSH! To see how annoying that actually is (I liken it to fingernails
being run across a blackboard) watch a couple of episodes of The Baby Story
(on cable/satelite TV here in the USA). I used to be an L&D nurse in my
younger days, and am guilty, too, but it didn't hit me how obnoxious that
behavior is from birth attendants until I was able to see a delivery as a
totally uniinvolved observer thru the magic of TV. The other thing that is
amazing about homebirths is how quiet the birthing room is, especially
during the pushing phase. Unless, like myself, mom feels the need to do
some primal grunting or "yelling". Mom/baby are usually left alone to do
the job they are meant to do with little or no outside interference. How
lovely. Too bad more women (and their HCPs) are not given the opportunity
to experience birth the way Mother Nature intended.
