Vickie,
Always treat co-workers (drs, nurses, etc) with respect. They really do
have babe's best interests in mind. Hard to believe sometimes but really
some nurses I work with really don't believe colostrum is enough in the
early days, or they believe mother needs her rest at nite., etc. Drs.
really believe that the jaundiced baby needs formula suppl. Frustrating
that many are not current in the bf literature, but again, small steps
of education will help OVER TIME. No one is going to change overnite.
The BFHI process can take years.
Somewhere there is an article on a webpage I think about winning over
people to become advocates. Good info is there. Anyone can refer Vickie
to this. ? Also, Vickie, whenever you have the opportunity to help a mom
and baby when another staff member is present they will pick up on
things you are teaching. Sometimes I grit my teeth knowing that the care
at our hosp could be so much better, but I pick my battles carefully and
keep taking baby steps.
