Jan,
Sometimes I hate working with yuppies! Often, these couples have sacrificed a
great deal of inner life and relationships in order to be "successful" in
business. The baby is the next culturally prescribed item to "purchase".
Sometimes these women have the attitude that they will plan and control the
entire process, and the baby also. We know they are in for a rude awakening!
I see these moms postpartum and they are a mess, due to the upset of all
their expectations. I suspect all this coldness is a combination of fear and
carryover of behavior expectations from the "business world". The fear is
defended against by retreating into "professionalism". IMHO. Almost always,
the baby works his/her magic and the parents fall in love.
Poor you, to get an entire class of yuppies! I hate it when I feel
that people I am teaching/working with are not "connecting" with me, makes me
feel awfully incompetent. Please don't interpret this classes' attitudes and
defense mechanisms as unreachableness, see what happens postpartum. You might
be pleasantly surprised.
