I don't know what type of scales the above post referred to, but years ago farms often had a spring-type scale, which was hung up and the object to be weighed was hung from a hook underneath the calibrated spring mechanism.  In the case of a baby, that meant attaching a sling to the hook and adjusting the weight.  As a young Mum with my eldest I didn't trust them as the scales seemed so primitive, but they turned out to be accurate.  My youngest was weighed at one week on shop scales (balance scales) normally used to weigh things like potatoes.  A few years ago one of my clients rang me to report that her husband, who was proficient at using them, had used their farm scales for baby weighing. He vouched for their accuracy.  For someone like your client, the turkey farm scales certainly saved a long drive.
